Wines by Wives would like to take a moment to wish all the wonderful women of the world a Happy International Women’s Day!
Women’s Day began as a protest in New York City in the early 1900’s against the mistreatment and inequality of women in the workforce. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the U.S. on February 28, 1909. After many women’s day conferences in the U.S. and Europe, the movement gained recognition and several European countries began observing the day. The Russian women’s “Bread and Peace” strike during WWI catapulted the movement into what it is today. in response to the deaths of 2 million Russian soldiers, Russian women in the work force went on strike for 4 days, forcing the Czar to give Russian women the right to vote. International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. In many countries IWD is celebrated just as you would celebrate Mother’s Day, with men and children giving gifts ad showing appreciation to the important women in their lives.
Let’s make today a day of recognition, appreciation, and support to any woman who has touched your life.
